Caging dynamics in bacterial colonies
نویسندگان
چکیده
In colonies, bacteria are often densely packed due to strong attractive forces between neighboring cells. For organisms where aggregation is mediated by type 4 pili interactions, the pilus-mediated motor activity fluidizes these but it unclear how close packaging affects bacterial motility. Here, we characterize dynamics of single cells over five orders magnitude in time. At short timescales, find pilus-driven ballistic dynamics, which depending on volume fraction cells, transitions caged or diffusive at intermediate timescales. Long-term dominated growth-induced radial motion overcoming caging high packings. Reducing interactions antibiotic treatment delays and introduces long-ranged collective motion.

Swarming dynamics in bacterial colonies
We determine and relate the characteristic velocity, length, and time scales for bacterial motion in swarming colonies of Paenibacillus dendritiformis growing on semi-solid agar substrates. The bacteria swim within a thin fluid layer, and they form long-lived jets and vortices. These coherent structures lead to anisotropy in velocity spatial correlations and to a two-step relaxation in velocity...
متن کاملUniversality in Bacterial Colonies
The emergent spatial patterns generated by growing bacterial colonies have been the focus of intense study in physics during the last twenty years. Both experimental and theoretical investigations have made possible a clear qualitative picture of the different structures that such colonies can exhibit, depending on the medium on which they are growing. However, there are relatively few quantita...
متن کاملCaging dynamics in a granular fluid.
We report an experimental investigation of the caging motion in a uniformly heated granular fluid for a wide range of filling fractions, varphi. At low varphi the classic diffusive behavior of a fluid is observed. However, as varphi is increased, temporary cages develop and particles become increasingly trapped by their neighbors. We statistically analyze particle trajectories and observe a num...

Microbiol. 13:931-934. 1965.-An automatic colony counter was tested extensively with colonies of two bacterial species, Serratia marcescens and Bacillus subtilis var. niger, grown on agar media. A stable relationship was established between machine counts and coun...
متن کاملBranching instability in expanding bacterial colonies.
Self-organization in developing living organisms relies on the capability of cells to duplicate and perform a collective motion inside the surrounding environment. Chemical and mechanical interactions coordinate such a cooperative behaviour, driving the dynamical evolution of the macroscopic system. In this work, we perform an analytical and computational analysis to study pattern formation dur...
